This system is an agreement on mutual recognition between member countries of the civil liability insurance certificate of motor vehicle owners. That is, an insurance certificate issued by one of the Member States is also considered valid in the territories of other member states. Currently, the system includes 48 countries.
The main purpose of the system is insurance coverage of motor vehicle owners visiting member countries is provided with.
Drivers, having obtained a green card, are exempted from the requirement to purchase new civil liability insurance at the borders of the countries they are visiting.
They provide compensation for losses of third parties who were injured or whose property was damaged as a result of traffic accidents caused by foreign drivers.
For the first time, a request was sent to join the Green Card system in 2012. In 2016, from January 1, it is planned to introduce a green card system.
